A Voyage Tale
In October 2023 I started building a wicker coracle (Boyne Currach). These traditional 'skin boats' featured in ancient Celtic voyage (iomraimh/Immran) tales such as The Voyage of Bran, The Voyage of St. Brendan and The Voyage of Mael Duin.
Working from a recipe outlined by Joe Hogan in his book Basketmaking in Ireland, I coppiced hazel rods from my parents plantation. The stakes were bound with heavy hemp twine. A canvas sheet was sewn around the carcass and several coats of bitumen paint applied to waterproof the structure.
