Greenwood
Green woodworking describes the process of carpentry which uses freshly felled, unseasoned timber. The high moisture content means the wood is soft and easy to carve.

Ten years ago I planted a sweet chestnut tree in my garden. It grew vigorously becoming bushy and extremely tall in a short space of time. Soon the rest of the garden began to suffer beneath the tree's dark canopy. The chestnut would have to go, but I was reluctant to simply fell and chop it up for firewood. Instead, I began to prune the tree's heavy lower limbs and whittle figurines from the wood.
The items I create are all hand carved using a simple whittling knife - no power tools, no electricity, no chemicals and no waste. I take only what I need from the tree allowing it to continue its life, while the rest of the garden benefits from increased light. |
